Cats

Naugatuck Animal Control does not respond to or pick up stray cats. If you have a stray or unwanted cat, please contact the Connecticut Humane Society for assistance and referral to additional resources.

Animal Control will get involved in cat incidents were a human has been bitten or scratched and the cat needs to be quarantined. Animal Control will also care for sick or injured cats when the owner is unknown and will investigate incidents of cruelty or neglect.

Wildlife

Naugatuck Animal Control does not respond to wild animal complaints unless the wild animal appears sick or injured, has bitten a human or domestic animal or is causing an immediate safety concern.  Wildlife pest issues on private property, such as a skunk or bees nest, should be handled through a private contractor. Please contact the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) at (860) 424-3333 for further assistance or guidance.

Rabies Vaccination

Licensing

Connecticut Law (22-349) requires that every dog over the age of six (6) months be licensed with the Naugatuck Town Clerk. Licenses can be obtained from the Town Clerk's Office at Town Hall or from an Animal Control Officer at the pound.

Allowing a Dog to Roam

Connecticut General Statute 22-364, Dogs Roaming at Large, states that no owner or keeper of any dog shall allow such dog to roam at large upon the land and not under the control of the owner or keeper. The State set fine for allowing a dog to roam is $92.00.

Adoptions

Animals are available for adoption through the Naugatuck Animal Control Shelter and are funded and by the State of Connecticut Department of Agriculture, Animal Population Control Program. Please call to make an appointment if you are interested in adopting a pet. After a pet is selected for adoption, the eligible owner will have to fill out a Vaccination/ Sterilization voucher (APCP-03) and pay a $50.00 fee. Voucher benefits are listed below:

  • $45.00 of the $50 is the State fee and the remaining $5.00 is the Town fee
  • $50.00 for a male cat
  • $70.00 for a female cat
  • $100.00 for a male dog
  • $120.00 for a female dog
  • two (2) pre-surgical vaccinations to be done at the time of sterilization

Vouchers are non transferrable.  Vouchers are only to be used for the adopted pet, by the person who adopted that pet and must be used within 60 days. If the Veterinarian fees are more than the voucher allows for, the eligible owner will be responsible to pay the difference. In addition, the eligible owner is responsible for any surgical complications and other vaccinations as required by the Veterinarian.

Previously sterilized pets are not part of the program and the eligible owner is entitled to a $45 refund (state fee only). All fees and services, including vaccinations, are now the responsibility of the owner.

The State of Connecticut Department of Agriculture, Animal Population Control Program provides sterilization and vaccination vouchers to low income families outside of the adoption process as well. Further information can be found here.
