On 10:25 am, Sunday March 17, 1991 (St. Patricks Day), Officer Nancy Nichols was on routine patrol when she stopped to assist a fellow officer during a traffic stop. 
The officer had stopped a car for passing through a red light at the intersection of Prospect and Locust Streets.
While speaking to the other Officer, Officer Nancy Nichols was struck by a car.
Officer Nichols was taken to St. Marys Hospital where she was pronounced deceased at 11:20 am. The cause of death was listed as multiple blunt traumatic injuries.
