10/31/2014 - NPD FACEBOOK POST - 10.30.14 - Phone Scam Alert
Hi everyone,

The Naugatuck PD has recently fielded phone calls from citizens pertaining to a scam where the callers are alleging they are employees of CL&P and informing people that they owe back money to the company.
The callers are demanding that money be paid back immediately and are seeking either credit card or checking information.

The Naugatuck PD is following up these incidents however we remind citizens that utility companies will never operate in this fashion. When receiving a call from any business claiming you owe money please make certain that you verify you are speaking with a legitimate business.

A couple of things to remember when dealing with these types of calls:

• The utility companies always have customer service lines that you can verify your account status – if receiving a call from someone claiming to be a utility, inform them that you will contact them back through the customer service line. Remember to NEVER re- contact the company through a number provided by the potential scammers.

• Be suspicious of high pressure tactics – it should always be a red flag when someone tells you that you MUST take action now or that you will suffer a consequence.

• NEVER pay through a money wiring services or provide personal information such as bank account numbers, social security or other personal identifiers.

• Call the police if you suspect you were contacted by a scammer – even if you are not actually scammed, the information you provide is helpful for us to at least warn others of these types of incidents.

Thank you – you friends at the Naugatuck PD
