You are probably familiar with the scam – but if not, here are some
general “red flags” associated with this scam. The “IRS” scam involves
persons contacting you as though they are IRS agents and aggressively
claim that that you owe money …
…The first clue that this is not legit is that they typically DEMAND
payment “right now” in the form of a money wire or pre paid credit card
or gift card …
Please remember that the IRS WILL NEVER require
you to pay immediately via money wires or prepaid credit cards/gift
cards … Any of these “quick payment” scenarios (IRS Scam or others) are a
huge red flag that the call is a scam.
Listen folks … the IRS
never threatens … they don’t have to … they are the IRS! … also … The
IRS will not “refer you to the police” … again – They don’t have to!!
….If ever in question – please keep this in mind …. The IRS is a United
States Government agency that is charged with the collection of taxes
and enforcement of tax laws … hypothetically if someone were to owe the
IRS money, they wouldn’t just call you out of the blue and threaten to
arrest you …. Its safe to say that if a tax situation were to escalate
to the point of arrest, the individuals involved would have had plenty
of notice and opportunity to rectify the situation before such a drastic
measure would occur … further, the IRS will NEVER become rude or
obnoxious or demanding … they are professionals and will always act as
such.
