NPD Facebook Post - 12.23.14 / Too Bad Tuesday - DWI's
Happy TOO BAD TUESDAY everyone!
Hope everyone is having a great week – just a couple days before Christmas and the holidays … In honor of the holidays, we are going to mix it up a little and make a little game out of TOO BAD TUESDAY….
...The game will involve information from some recent DWI arrests….I choose DWI’s because it’s the holiday season, and we want to bring awareness to the fact that some folks seem to lose their minds when they indulge a bit too much in the libations…. That s right – I said it…. “LIBATIONS” ….. Its my 10 cent word of the day!.... Look it up - I had to…. and I truly believe I used it flawlessly in that sentence….
…..Anyway, back to our game…
Now – I picked a series of arrest circumstances surrounding recent DWI arrest here in the “Tuck” …. These arrest revolve around the question “ what clues give an officer the idea that someone might be driving while impaired?” ... Now, I may or may not have placed a circumstance that did not occur – and its your job to pick it out of the choices ….
… So, here we go – please try to find the “Fictional” incident below :
A) A resident calls police and says a car has been parked with its lights on in front of their home for an extended amount of time… when the officer checks it out, he finds the driver slumped over the wheel….with a pile of vomit on the ground outside the drivers door....
B) An officer observes a car cross over the double yellow line into an oncoming officers lane....
C) A car ”kinda” parks off to the side of the road…”Kinda” as in – it was “kinda” still partially in the road and “kinda” off to the side, straddling the right shoulder of the road…and when the officer approaches the car, the driver is snoozing away....
D) A car smashes into another car….flee’s the scene …. and gets lost …. and …. Pulls over because they it cant find its way out… all the while its been followed by a witness who calls the police and gives the location of the now lost and stopped car …
E) An officer observes a car he is following behind cross over the double yellow line…. continue over the center line a short distance… then makes a VERY WIDE left turn....
F) A woman calls police and informs that her husband just pulled out of his driveway….(Hold on… Not so fast to pick this one… there’s more!...) The wife advises police that she warned him not to drive because he had been drinking….The woman offers a description of the vehicle and the driver …and includes the location of the package store he is headed to… Officers check the locations between the residence and the package store and one of the officers intercepts a vehicle matching the description provided as well as the driver description….as it pulls into the predicted liquor store parking lot...
G) All of the above ….
Okay – Those are your choices….You have three seconds to make up your mind and decide which of these incidents were legit, and which were not….
….WHAT…. You want a hint?!! …. Well, Okay… But only because it’s the holidays … and you only get one!
….My hint is…..The first six answers are all correct - But none of them are not the RIGHT answer….
….Okay – Time is up…. The correct answer is……… yep – you got it -“G) All of the above” …. That’s right – ALL the of these incidents actually occurred right here in the Borough
....Seems as though there is no shortage of ways to be arrested for driving while impaired – Just when you think you’ve seen them all, someone comes up with a new “twist” on how to get a free nights stay at the NPD B&B for driving while not sober….
…Now, I know we say it…. Heck – Bangor even did a poster for it (….Cute lil’ bugger!!...)… But it seems there are always some that just don’t listen….
… So, this is what Id like to do – Because this is the holiday season – I’m hoping one or two of you out there will read this… (and of course, get a “chuckle” out of it …. ‘cause I’m so darned whitty!!) .... and maybe…JUST Maybe…. You will heed the warning to not DRINK AND DRIVE….
- I want to tell you that we understand it’s the holiday party time…. And that you want to have a good time… and you should, why not - you’re a good person… you work hard, you NEVER get in trouble …. You just want to relax and enjoy a couple of “Pops” … (… I know – that term is REALLY dating me!!)… And we agree – you ARE a good person… after all, you MUST be a good person if you are reading this as an NPD Facebook fan .… unless, of course the Naugatuck Patch picked this up and printed it – in which case we will STILL give you the benefit of the doubt - that you are a good person…after all, you are STILL reading this post!! (…Easy Patch… We’re just messin’ with you!!) ….
…. But ….DWI’s happen to good people all the time…. I think I can speak for most police officers when I say that nothing makes you feel so crumby as when you have to arrest a good person for DWI…. But what makes an officer feel even worse – is responding to a fatal crash and seeing the results of a good person making the worst decision of their life by choosing to drive after drinking …. Particularly when they were NOT the one that suffered the fatality….
…. I want you – that good person – to learn from the mistakes of others …. Learn from the people above, learn from those that have been there and suffered through the consequences …..
....I ask on behalf of your family and friends …. on behalf of the other occupants of that car that will share the road with you…. on behalf of all the men and women of the Naugatuck Police Department…. Heck…on behalf of Bangor (that cute lil’ bugger!!....)
…. Please - Make arrangements, plan ahead …. get a designated driver….sucker that nephew you watched when he was a kid ….or that aunt that gifted you a $5.00 gift card to Starbucks to drive your butt home, BUT PLEASE – DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!!
Thanks for listening….We would like to wish everyone a safe and very happy holiday season – We will be here if you need us!!!
